The plaza treasures one of the most prestigious and significant churches of Palermo: the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi (“San Franciscu” in local dialect).
Its amazing gothic and Sicilian Baroque architecture, the fresco paintings, the Serpotta plasters and the cloister, make this small plaza, one of the city center’s most evocative corners.
If the walking tour of the church and its enchanting cloister makes you feel thirsty and maybe willing to taste some traditional street food, you can easily do so by stopping at Antica Focacceria San Francesco…just across the plaza! A deconsecrated chapel until 1834 and today one of the most famous places in Palermo, where culture is spread and promoted through food.
